While the volcanic eruption in Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull glacier caused world-wide chaos among airline travelers, golfers in Iceland experienced no tee-time delays at all. "Thanks for your concern, but we are playing," said Olafur Agustsson, chairman of IGGA, the Icelandic Groundsmen and Greenkeepers Association, when asked about the situation.

The remarkable thing is that while the rest of the world was dealing with tremendous difficulty caused by the disruption in air travel, most of Iceland was totally unaffected - including the golf courses. No golf courses have been damaged by ashes falling from the eruption, and Iceland's golfers keep strolling the fairways with great enthusiasm. Iceland's golf season usually starts officially in late April, when the summer greens are brought into play, but Iceland's long but mild winter allows for a remarkable number of decent golf days, although on temporary greens.
